Transplant Offering Coming to Mayo Clinic Healthy Living

“I’ve been in and out of hospitals all my life. I was so shocked to find such a thought process of nurturing at Mayo Clinic.” –Shana Daniels, kidney transplant patient.

“The doctors, nurses and the whole transplant team not only took care of Rylie, but they took care of our whole family.” –Tara Weigel, mother of Rylie, a heart transplant patient.

Each year, Mayo Clinic surgeons and physicians in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida perform more than 1,400 transplants on individuals like Shana and Rylie. Mayo’s transplant program, which is the largest in the United States, is consistently recognized as a leader in transplant outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Beginning in June, Mayo Clinic transplant physicians will be available at Mayo Clinic Healthy Living to provide one-on-one consultations for individuals who may need a heart, lung, liver, kidney, or pancreas transplant. Consultations will offer a second opinion including a review of the participant’s medical record, opportunity to ask questions, and help scheduling a transplant evaluation appointment, should the participant choose Mayo Clinic for transplant care.

Mayo Clinic’s transplant teams are working at the forefront of their fields, and our transplant surgeons have pioneered a number of procedures, including the country’s first quadruple transplant – heart, double-lung, and liver. In addition, our researchers are exploring ways to advance the field of organ replacement.

Tobacco-Addiction Services are Back by Popular Demand

Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center (NDC) services are coming back to Mayo Clinic Healthy Living at Mall of America. NDC experts were at Mayo Clinic Healthy Living in January helping people understand tobacco addiction. Beginning on Monday, April 2, the experts will be providing these same group and individual appointments on an ongoing basis.

These sessions, called “Understanding Tobacco-Addiction,” are geared towards all smokers, regardless of whether or not you are ready to stop. NDC experts know that stopping smoking can be difficult and that you may have mixed feelings about wanting to quit. Talking with a NDC expert will provide you with education, resources, a carbon monoxide reading to test your personal level of exposure, and a follow-up call for additional support.

You may select from either a small group session or individualized consult. Group sessions are 45-minutes and cost $25. Individualized consults are 30-minutes and cost $40. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call us at 952-854-2028.

Mayo Clinic’s Nicotine Dependence Center experts come to Mayo Clinic Healthy Living with a wealth of clinical experience and years of success in helping people combat tobacco addiction. In fact, more than 45,000 people have used NDC’s services to help them stop using tobacco. The NDC was one of the first centers in the country to focus exclusively on treating tobacco dependence and offers the most up-to-date approaches. The NDC’s model of care has now become the standard in many medical centers around the United States.

We’re offering free blood pressure readings at Mayo Clinic Healthy Living!

We’re excited to debut a new service at Mayo Clinic Healthy Living — free blood pressure readings! This service is free for everyone, whether your blood pressure is in a healthy range, you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension) or you’ve never had your blood pressure measured. These quick check-ins are a nice complement to the more in-depth heart packages we recently released. Plus, having up-to-date values will help you get more meaningful results from our free, in-store wellness assessment.

One of our Health Navigators, Amanda, gets a guest ready for her blood pressure reading.

Why the focus on high blood pressure and overall heart health at Mayo Clinic Healthy Living? First, high blood pressure is a prominent health issue — according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one out of every three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. Plus, high blood pressure can put you at increased risk for heart disease and stroke, so getting a handle on it early is important. Second, heart health knowledge is a key component of a well-rounded wellness plan — the fact of the matter is that you can avoid heart disease by taking action early.

Stop into the store during your next visit to the Mall of America and get your blood pressure measured. In the meantime, learn more about preventing and managing high blood pressure on MayoClinic.org.

P.S. Since we’ve got blood pressure checks on our minds, we re-watched the Know Your Numbers video (released by the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media). Check it out and start humming along!
